PEPENADO

The Pepenado technique introduces graphic icons which are meticulously threaded in between the warp threads directly onto the loom. The textural embroidered icons add a floating dimension to the designs enhancing the propulsive beauty of these masterfully handwoven fabrics.

The collection represents an extraordinary intimacy between the artisan and cloth in which their feet lift the shafts, powerful arms propel the shuttle, and dexterous fingers interlace threads between warp yarns to create the icons.

The layering of weaving techniques and shades of colour creates a collection full of vibrancy in which soft tones are enriched with rich pop hues.

STRIPE + SEMI PLAINs

Our collection of stripe designs are beautifully hand woven on a treadle loom using high quality cotton. Every part of the process is achieved by hand starting with hand spinning the yarn, the fabric is then woven on the hand built wooden ooms in small family run workshops in the western highlands of Guatemala. The weaving is a skillful and physical process as the shuttle is thrown and shafts of the loom lifted by the power of the weaver. The resulting fabric has the rare and uniquely beautiful qualities of a hand crafted product.

This collection uses subtle and intricate blends of colours to create stunning fabrics with depth of tone. Entirely crafted by the skilled hands of our master weavers in Guatemala on hand built wooden looms, these fabrics are designed to be versatile and whilst imbuing the unique characteristics of a hand woven textile. 100% cotton, 120cm wide.

FALSERIA

Falseria is the Mayan name for this intricate and textural patterned weave technique. It is hand woven on a treadle loom by Maya master weavers. The warp on the treadle loom is lifted by foot pedals which lift each of the 29 shafts according to which are selected. The threads of the warp are alternately selected by hand to be lifted and lowered while the weft is passed between the threads with the shuttle. This traditional hand weaving technique has been mastered by Maya artisans since its introduction by the Spanish in the 1500’s. Normally a narrow width fabric we have developed wider falseria looms making our fabric 110cm width and adapting the technique for contemporary use.
