SPOTLIGHT | A RUM FELLOW | ON THE LOOM - ABACUS ‘POSY’
A large-scale hand-knotted commission takes shape in Nepal.
Currently on the loom in Nepal, this large-scale Abacus rug in Posy is being hand knotted for a Studio Indigo project.
Part of our Tekton collection, Abacus takes its name from the architectural stone positioned between sections of a classical column. Inspired by the quieter details of architecture, the design explores the beauty found in elements that are both functional and decorative.

At A RUM FELLOW, every rug begins with a dialogue between design and craft. Developed in our Somerset studio and brought to life by our weaving partners in Nepal, each piece is the result of a close collaboration between skilled artisans and our design team led by Co-Founder Caroline Lindsell.
Hand knotting is one of the most intricate rug-making techniques, with individual knots tied by hand around a vertical warp. The design gradually emerges row by row as thousands of knots build pattern, texture and depth across the surface.
Crafted from Tibetan handspun wool and silk, the rug combines rich natural texture with a subtle lustre that brings movement and depth to the geometric composition.
We have worked alongside our weaving partners for many years, continually developing new collections, refining techniques and exploring what is possible through hand craftsmanship. These long-standing relationships are fundamental to the way we work and central to the quality of every piece we create.
Once removed from the loom, Abacus will pass through a series of washing, carving and finishing processes before making its way to its final destination!
